New Old Stock Holsters

If you spend any time shopping for a gun holster, you may come across holsters that look new which are marked as "new old stock". Quite a number of people don't really understand what "new old stock" holsters really are?

Basically these are brand new gun holsters that, for some reason didn't sell, and are now aged a bit. In many cases, a newer model has been released or the old stock model has been discontinued. This happens quite a bit with large holster makers like Don Hume, Galco, and Bianchi. They may quite a bit of a particualr holster model on hand and then phase that model out. Rather than take a loss on these gun holsters, the company will sell them into the secondary market to dealers or liquidation specialists.

Even though the holsters are marked as "old stock", they are generally brand new and still in the original packaging. Gun holsters of this nature are especially common on Ebay.

Would I be concerned about buying an "old stock" holster? Not in the slighest. As I mentioned before, they are generally un-used and you can get some amazing deals on these holsters.

Galco Holsters Overpriced?

While I really like the Galco line of holsters, I have to wonder sometimes about their pricing. They offer one of the most diverse series of IWB holsters, but some of their prices make my wallet cringe. Galco is a production line based holster maker that utilizes an assembly line approach of building holsters. As far production holster makers (like Don Hume, G&G, Blackhawk, etc.), Galco is the oldest and most well known. Unfortunately, they are also the most expensive. Now I understand that Galco uses horsehide for a number of their IWB models, but even horsehide isn't going to drive the price up $15 to $20 above a comparable model from another maker.

In no way am I knocking the quality of thier product (I own several myself), but I happen to be of the opinion that they are somewhat overpriced compared to the market. I really like a number of their models, especially the deep cover IWB versions, but I can't bring myself to pay the retail prices. If I had to narrow it down to a single favorite, I'd have to go with the newer Skyops model. For deep cover carry of a small to medium handgun, it really can't be beat (IMHO). The only problem I have with that model is that fact that it's only available in a 1.25 inch belt configuration.

One day, I hope that they might consider making their stuff just a little more affordable.
